How to get to Bahamas by Air

There are a number of flights from Miami, Ft Lauderdale and Orlando as well as from New York and Boston to Nassau. From Nassau there are various connecting flights to the surrounding Islands. There are also direct flights from Paris, Germany and London as well as from Canada.

There is a departure tax to be paid at the airport at the Bahamas. Since the amount is liable to change, please check with your airline regarding the amount. Within the Caribbean, there are various flights to the Bahamas.

The two largest airports are at Nassau, on New Providence and at Freeport, on Grand Bahama.

The Lynden Pindling International Airport, 16 km west of Nassau, is the largest in the country. There are three terminal concourses; domestic and charter flights, flights to USA and non US international flights.

Airport Facilities at Nassau

There are two tourist information desks at the airport. ATMs and telephones booths are there in both terminals and there is a bank, a bureau de change and a post office in the lobby of Terminal 1.

Cafés bars and shops can be found all over the airport. Although trolleys are available for free at Terminal 2, there are no locker facilities at the airport. The airport is fully accessible for disabled travellers with ramps and special toilets.

There are three parking lots with 1,760 car spaces.

There is no public transport available at the airport and the only way to get to your destination is by taxi which can easily be found outside the airport. Car rental companies have desks at the airport from where you can rent a car.

The occasional free drinks on arrival and a live band playing in the airport hall will definitely set the pace for a great Caribbean holiday!

The Grand Bahama International Airport is 5 km north of downtown Freeport and has 2 terminals. It is one of the 2 major airports of the country.

Airport Facilities at the Grand Bahama International Airport

ATMs and post office can be found at the airport. There is a restaurant and bar at the international terminal along with several shops, including duty free outlets.

The airport is accessible by the disabled with ramps and specially made toilets. Emergency medical facilities and first aid is also available.

From the airport you can hire a taxi from the front of the arrivals or rent a car from one of the many car rentals available at the airport. Some hotels and resorts also provide shuttle service to and from the airport but you have to directly get in touch with the hotel for this.

How to get to Bahamas by Sea

Ferry: There are ferry services between Fort Lauderdale and Freeport, Bahamas.

Cruise ships: Rarely does a Caribbean Cruise not include a stop over at the Bahamas. Nassau and Free Port are the popular port of calls.

Yachts: There are several ports of entry in the popular Islands. Abaco, Andros, Berry Islands, Bimmi, Eleuthera, Exuma, Grand Bahamas, Long Island, New Providence, Ragged Island and San Salvador – all allow yachts in their waters. It is advisable to contact the local authorities for more information regarding documents and permits.
