Memling Museum

History

Memling Museum is situated within the St. John’s Hospital Complex. The hospital exhibits the art works of Hans Memling, a German born Painter who moved to Flanders a small region of Belgium.In the year 1978, St. John’s Hospital was converted into Memling Museum, Hospital Museum and the old Pharmacy.

A true learning expedition, a journey to museum inform the visitors about the past of the hospital administration. On display is the furniture, paintings, sculptures, silverware and pewter ware. The building is the oldest and largest framework in Europe and the hospital chapel is a tribute to the works of Hans Memling. Also, Hans Memling lived and worked in Brugge in the 15th century and created most of his masterpieces here.

Shrine of St. Ursula is a landmark in the works of Memling painted primarily for St. John’s Hospital. The wooden shrine comprises of the relics of St. Ursula and depicts the history of Ursula. Altarpiece of Saint-John the Baptist and Saint-John the Evangelist are some of the other masterpieces on display.

Best time to visit

The ideal time to visit Belgium is mid-April to mid-October.
