Macau Travel Guide

If you thought Macau was only about casinos and nightlife, think again. In recent years Macau has become a popular destination especially as an added attraction to Hong Kong. This is bustling little city on mainland China lies 40 miles away from Hong Kong offers expansive parks, fascinating temples and golden beaches to boot.

Macau - a mix of cultures as disparate as the Chinese and the Portuguese - is one of the most interesting parts of China. You can get to Macau either by air or by ferry from Hong Kong, and once there, head for the western part of town, which has the main concentration of hotels and hostels. These are thankfully not very expensive, except over the weekends. Macau is best known for its casinos but there is a lot else to see and do here. A mere 18 sq km of land consisting of a peninsula and two islands, Macau, after more than two centuries of Portuguese occupation, was returned to China in 1999.

The city of Macau and its people, though basically Chinese, have a distinctly Portuguese side. Many traditions are Portuguese, there are Portuguese buildings and many people speak Portuguese. In fact, the Macanese, of mixed Portuguese-Chinese ancestry, form a significant part of the populace of Macau.

Macau is where two cultures collide and make a delicious concoction. Travel to Macau to experience this.

Macau’s Cotai Strip will give Las Vegas’ Strip a run for their money. With more than 30 casinos operating in this little city, Macau is definitely the casino capital this side of the Pacific. Gambling is legal here and the casinos contribute largely to the economy. Gambling was legalized by the Portuguese in 1851 and besides the casinos other forms of gambling that are popular here are Greyhound and Horse racing.

Macau is one of the richest cities in the world with the lowest infant mortality rate.
