Activities in Ecuador

For the finest climbing and trekking experience, go 60km south of Quito to Parque Nacional Cotopaxi. The Cotopaxi volcano (5900m) is the world’s tallest active volcano. It is enjoyed immensely by climbing enthusiasts, but don’t go beyond the Jose Ribas refuge without a guide unless you are experienced in snow and ice climbing. Close by, the town of Banos is a good base and has the added benefit of warm thermal springs. Ecuador’s highest peak, Chimborazo (6310m), is not for the inexperienced mountaineer. Stick to the area around the mountain instead of scaling the peak if you want a less strenuous trek.

Ecuador has warm coastal areas all year round excellent for swimming, especially the beaches at Atacames, San Vicente, Bahia de Caraquez, Bahia de Manta, Salinas and Playas.

Galapagos Islands is ideal for scuba diving but take your equipment and book a tour in advance. Snorkeling in the archipelago is a treat and you may even find baby sea lions staring at you through your mask. Again, please carry your own gear.

Jungle excursions, including walks, swims and dugout-canoe trips can be arranged at Mishuali, Coca, Banos, Dureno, Tena and Quito.

Live life to the fullest. Make a list of ‘ things to do before I die’ and tick ...
