‘Take me back to Cairo…to hear the Sphinx… talking every night’ - Karim Shukry

Cairo is the stuff of sequin-spangled tales. Cairo also known as Al-Qahirah, or 'the victorious' is a city of calm mosques, chaotic bazaars and colourful streets and has been on every traveller’s lust list. Whatever your fantasies may have conjured, Cairo won’t disappoint. Whether it’s dusty streets in mad markets you’ve thought up, or slinky skyscrapers by shiny roads – you’ll find they all mark space in this city of many faces. Cairo is like Pandora’s box: just as you think you have seen it all, it throws up yet another facet – a museum, a souk, pyramids, the old city, Citadel the City of the Dead, the Sphinx. The list goes on.

Cairo has much to live up to: the legacy of Byzantium, the wonder of the pyramids, and the mystery of the Nile, and it acquits itself with grace. So venture forth to this pulsating city and get hypnotized!

While shopping in the souks – especially Khan-el-khalili, watch your wallet and purse. Plenty of pick pockets around.

It is recommended that you take a train journey from Cairo to Luxor – it is an awesome experience. See the Sound and Light Show at the Sphinx – it will transport you to another world!

If you are going to be entering a pyramid, just be sure that you do not suffer from claustrophobia. Also you need to be quite fit as the climbs are steep.
