St. Jacobi Kirche

St Jacobi Kirche, Hamburg, is the most beautiful and one of the five main churches of Hamburg. With a 125 meter high tower, Jacobi Kirche is a fine example of Gothic architecture. The church had its first mention in the year 1255 and with the expansion of the city of Stadtmauer in 1260; it was included into the Hamburg city. It almost took a period of 50 years for the church to be completely rebuilt in the north German Gothic style in 1350. The Second World War rummaged the Jacobi Kirche, Hamburg. However it was rebuilt in the medieval style with the same interiors which was luckily saved. The dome of the church tower was reconstructed after a faulty construction in the 1960’s.

The Jacobi Church is renowned for its three medieval altars and the admirable paintings and sculptures that embellish the interior of the building. The Altar of the Holy Trinity built in 1518, the Altar of St. Peter built in 1508 and the Altar of St. Luke being transferred from Hamburg’s St. Mary’s Cathedral are the three altars of St. Jacobi. On Special Sundays, Church Festivals and feasts of the saint, the wings of the altar are open and its treasures displayed. Another jewel of St. Jacobo is its famous organ by Arp Schnitger created in 1693. One of the largest baroque organs in the world, it is played regularly in every Sunday service since 1993. This uniquely baroque styled organ is the largest in Europe with 60 stops and about 4,000 pipes.

At St Jacobi Kirche, Hamburg, regular services are held every Sunday at 10.00am. Vespers are celebrated on Thursday night with Gregorian chant and hymns and liturgical dance. Midday services are held every Tuesday with biblical readings. These services are attended by 100 – 500 people.
