Ross Island

History

One of the islands in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Ross Island is situated about 2 km east of Port Blair. Having served as the administrative headquarters for the islands, before the 1941’s earthquake, tourists can still observe leftovers of a magnificent history in the remains of the church, swimming pool and the residence of the chief commissioner with its enormous gardens and impressive ballrooms. A prominent cemetery and a small museum displaying a compilation of old records are also present there, which is administered by the Indian Navy.

Ross Island with its riches of ruins in it has become a very hot tourist spot in the region. It is said that this small isle had been under British dominion until 1942 and later from 1942 to 1945, the place was under Japanese occupation. Nevertheless, in 1945 the allies reoccupied the island and afterwards deserted it, despite the place having been the seat of authority of the British during their rule over the Indian subcontinent.

Moreover, like the other isles in Andaman and Nicobar, Ross Island also has thick forests with endemic flora and fauna but the place has no life as such in terms of human habitation due to the fact that it is prohibited to settle there. In 1788-89, post Archibald Blair's inspection of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, this conclusion was established at current day Port Blair (then known as Port Cornwallis) that no settlement would be established there as the mortality rate is very high in the area.

Best time to visit

Trivia

At present, Ross Island has a small post called INS Jawara, set up by the Indian Navy in April 1979, and named after one of the native tribes of the Andaman group of islands.
