A P State Archaeology Museum

History

The AP State Archaeology Museum situated in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh is a museum of immense historical importance. The museum’s collection was discovered during an excavation conducted by archaeologist Henry Cousens, who explored the site in the beginning of the 19th century, with the final excavation carried out under the supervision of the Nizam of Hyderabad. The items thus discovered were placed in a museum built on the very site, following which the contents were moved to the current building under the expert supervision of the Archaeological Survey of India in the year 1952.

Earlier in the year 1930, the State Museum resided inside a palace constructed in the year 1864 within the Public Gardens, Nampally. The palace was built by the Nizam for one of his daughters, and was known as the "Doll's House". The daughter of the Nizam however did not occupy the palace, owing to a superstition.

The main attraction of the museum is an Egyptian mummy that was incidentally brought to the museum by the son-in-law of VI Nizam Mahbub Ali Khan, who bought it for just 1000 pounds. In addition there is a copy of the Holy Quran that bears the seal of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan.

The museum also features a separate gallery on Buddha, a gallery of bronze artefacts, Jain gallery, an Arms & Armour gallery, Numismatics gallery and Ajanta gallery along with other numerous archaeological artefacts from the Nizam, Kakatiya dynasty.
