Festivals and Events in Visakhapatnam

The main festivals in Visakhapatnam that are celebrated with great fervour and enthusiasm are Visakha Utsav, Chandanotsavam, Lumbini festival, ISKCON Festival, and Navy Day.

Visakha Utsav, a festival organised by the Department of Tourism along with the district administration, features the art and culture of Visakhapatnam and is attended by thousands of people from all over the country. The festival takes place for four days in December. Rama Krishna Beach is the primary location of Visakha Utsav. The highlights of this festival are the cultural programmes, traditional crafts, heritage tours, a garment exhibition and a flower show. So if you are planning to buy some ethnic wear or some special flower pots or simply want to see the different variety of flowers, then a visit to this festival is a must.

Another popular festival in Visakhapatnam is Chandanotsavam. Every year, this festival is organised at the temple of Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha, Simhachalam in March and April. The idol at the temple is always covered with sandal paste. On the Chandanotsavam day, the existing sandalwood paste is removed and a fresh layer of sandalwood paste is applied. The main puja takes place at around 3pm and then the devotees get a glimpse of the idol, without the sandalwood paste smeared on the idol. The festival is attended by thousands of devotees from all over the country.

Organised by the Andhra Pradesh Government, Lumbini festival, is a multi-hued and spirited festival. People wait for this festival enthusiastically and gather to celebrate it in December. The festival takes place from second Friday to Sunday. In Buddhism, this festival is celebrated in a majestic way, clearly depicting the traditional Buddhist culture. The key attraction of this festival is the Buddhist paintings. This festival offers a great opportunity to local painters, sculptors to display their talent and earn out of it.

The Eastern Naval Command's Head Quarters is located in Visakhapatnam and hence the Navy Day is celebrated with great pomp and honour. The Eastern Naval Command organises a parade, events and an exhibition to display naval artefacts, weapons, ships, and guns. This special day is celebrated on the Beach Road.

ISKCON Utsav is a grand festival that is usually held during Dussehra. The grand fair is organised for three days. This is a festival that shows the Indian culture. The city of Visakhapatnam gets into a festive mood with devotees chanting Hare Rama Hare Krishna. During this religious festival, Bhajans and Gita Path are organised along with a variety of activities performed by children such as dance, drama and other cultural performances. The festival starts with blazing the image of the king of demons, Ravana, followed by Ram Lila. The fun rides, food stalls and games draw the attention of the children. The key idea is to create awareness about ISKCON.
