Festivals and Events in Warangal

Samakka Saralamma Jataka and Shakumbhari are the two prominent festivals in Warangal that are celebrated with great fanfare and enthusiasm.

The biggest congregation of tribes anywhere in the world, the Samakka Saralamma Jataka is celebrated over a four day period in January or February. At least 6 million tribals gather in attendance every year at the Medaram Village and the adjoining Jampanna Vagu rivulet for this festival. The festival rivals the grandeur of the Kumbha Mela held in north India in terms of sheer numbers and if you happen to be in Warangal during this period then do attend the festival. The festival is based on a ritual depicting a duel between a mother and a daughter as they fought against the unjust rule of a Kakatiya king.

Shakumbhari festival celebrated in the first week of January, which is dedicated to the Goddess Bhadrakali, is another important festival in Warangal that is celebrated with much gusto.
