Culture of Chandigarh

Le Corbusier, the architect of Chandigarh, had designated sector 14 of the city as the cultural zone. Museums and the university with faculties in fine arts, Asian studies and so on, were located here. Chandigarh has several museums, both large and small, including the International Dolls Museum, the main government museum and art gallery, the Fine Arts museum and the Museum of Evolution of Life. The exhibits range from pre-historic artefacts to contemporary art.

Chandigarh also celebrates certain special festivals like Baisakhi, in mid-April, which marks the beginning od the harvesting season. Women swinging in groves of trees celebrate the Teej festival during monsoons which is marked with folk songs intoning the woman’s separation from her beloved during the romantic rainy season. The Rock Garden is especially famous for its Teej fair. In addition, the Rock Garden also has an open-air theatre where performances are organised throughout the year.
