Languages of Goa

Konkani and Marathi are the widely spoken languages in Goa. These languages follow the Devanagari script. You will also find people speaking Portuguese; however, it is spoken only by the elite class or the people of Indo-Portuguese descent.

Before liberation in 1961, Portuguese was the official language. However, now Konkani is the official language in Goa and is used for government correspondence.

In schools, Marathi is taught. As a matter of fact, local newspapers are published in Marathi as well. English and Hindi are the other spoken languages in Goa. You will also find people speaking Kannad, Urdu and Gujarati.
