Religion in Goa

Religion plays a pivotal role in the life of Goans. Hinduism and Christianity are the major religions of Goa. Almost 95 percent of the total population of Goa follow either of the two religions.

Majority of the people are Hindus. There are many Hindu temples in Goa. During the Portuguese era, a lot of people started following Christianity. Churches play an important role in the social life of the people.

Goa has a small population of people following Islam. The Safa Shahouri mosque, located in Ponda is the biggest mosque in Goa.

Sikhism, Buddhism and Jainism are other religions that are followed in Goa.
