Shatrunjaya Hills

History

Shatrunjaya Hills, located in Palitana, at a distance of 51 km from Bhavnagar, are one of the sacred and holy hills of Gujarat. The name of the hill literally means ‘Hills of Victory’. The hills have Jain Temples which are considered to be one of its kinds in India. The journey towards the hills is of about 4 km, and one can reach the Jain Temples either on foot, or by sitting in Doli’s or lift chairs. Shatrunjaya Hills have 863 temples dipped in the beauty of white marble with enclosures that date back to some 900 years ago. From the hills one can see the stunning view of nature and Gulf of Khambat.

With fragrance of Jasmine flowers filling the air, a sense of peace and serenity envelops one, at Shatrunjaya Hills. Each temple is adorned with gold, silver and precious jewels donated by the rich merchants. It is believed that these Jain Temples were often visited by Adinath, the first Jain Tirthankara and later on his son erected the first temple on the Shatrunjaya Hills. According to the ancient scriptures countless souls have attained Moksha on the sacred hills of Shatrunjaya.

The hills have two series of temples and all are protected inside the fortifications. There are in total 9 enclosures with each one consisting of one central temple and other small temples. It is said that many of these temples were built in 11th century. Out of all these beautiful temples, the Adishwar Temple is the most significant and is dedicated to Shri Adishwar. It was the first temple to be built on Shatrunjaya Hills and is the most sacred one.

Located at an elevation of almost 603 meters, Shatrunjaya Hills are considered to have the highest number of temples anywhere in the world at such a great height. It took 900 years of hard work and craftsmanship to erect these magnificent and splendid temples. The walls of these temples are exquisitely carved with figurines, animal motifs, and ivory miniatures which will take your breath away. It is also said that the Pandavas stayed at these hills and were first to build shrines here, and later attained salvation in the abode of these majestic temples.

The best time to visit Shatrunjaya Hills is November to March when the weather is pleasant in Bhavnagar.

Timing

The temples at Shatrunjaya Hills are open from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm every day.
