A paradise for adventure sports enthusiasts, there are plenty of outdoor activities in Himachal Pradesh. Some of the activities that you can enjoy here are angling, camping, golfing, para gliding, rock climbing, river rafting, and hang gliding, among others.

The picturesque little hamlet of Sangla is well known for trout fishing. You can catch the Brown and Rainbow trout in the Baspa waters of Sangla. Do not get impatient; stalk your fish calmly because the trout can see you, as the waters of Baspa River are very clear.

The Gaura River in Chail and Beas River in Kullu Valley are famous for fishing. Other side water streams of the River Beas like Sarvari, Sainj, Parbati, and Tirthan are also home to trout, mahseer, and other fish. The Uhl River near Barot is also a famous spot for travellers looking to fish.

Camps in Himachal offer good accommodation and are also equipped with many outdoor activities like angling, trekking and rafting. Some of the important camping sites are Sarchu in Lahaul, Sangla Valley, and Kalpa in Kinnaur, Tabo in Spiti, Dharamshala in Kangra and also in Chail and Pabbar Valley.

The Banjara Camps at Sangla are a good option for camping, with its Swiss style tents. Amidst the abundant greens, the forests are the perfect unwinding spots for travellers. You can witness the rich flora and fauna around you, taking in the birds in striking shades of red, blue and green. Around the camps you can also enjoy serene nature walks.

Carry warm blankets, torches, spare batteries and candles and a good map. Make sure you carry your camera, binoculars and a good book on birds as there will be a variety of bird species you will get to see while camping in the forests.

Shaily Peak around Naldehra is the ideal place to enjoy golfing.

Hang-gliding and Para-gliding

Hang gliding can be a memorable flying experience. It offers a personal instructor to take care of your safety and to help you explore the Biling Peak in Kangra.

Paragliding can be done from mountain and flat land and is ideal during dry conditions. The famous paragliding destinations are Bhaikali in Kullu, Bundla Dhar near Bilaspur, Kullu Valley, and also the Kangra Hills. The ideal time for paragliding is between the months of May - June and September - October when the climate is sunny. Flying in the mountainous region can be a little challenging, so you are advised to fly with a local guide.

The ideal spots for para-sailing in Himachal are Billing, Kullu, Solang, Lahaul, and Spiti.

River Rafting

Adventure enthusiasts can go rafting on the rivers and lakes of Himachal Pradesh. One can try out the following rivers - Chandrabhaga in Lahaul, Sutlej in Shimla, Beas in Kullu, Ravi in Chamba and Spiti in Spiti Valley.

Less experienced rafters can go rafting in the Gobind Sagar Lake in Bilaspur, Chamera Lake in Dalhousie and Pandoh Lake in Kullu. However, the best season suited for this adventure activity is summer as the water gets too chilly in the winter. Monsoons should be avoided as the strong water currents are not suitable for rafting.

Don’t be scared even if you don’t know how to swim, you can still do this under the guidance of experts. Nearby camps will provide you with the necessary equipment on rent.

Rock Climbing

The Rocky Mountains in Manali provide opportunities for rock climbing. The famous ones are - Beas Kund Region, Hanuman Tibba, Shitidhar Peak and Deo Tibba. There are trained specialists to guide travellers and help them throughout. For tourists who haven’t tried rock climbing before, it is advisable to try the gentle slopes first and then move on to the steep ones. Make sure you carry comfortable walking shoes, along with prescribed medication, and a good map of the area.

The snow covered slopes of Narkanda and Kufri are a paradise for skiers in winter months. Mahasu Peak in Kufri is the best peak to start off skiing with as it offers gentle slopes for beginners.

Manali, often known as the land of skiing, is the most suitable destination for this activity. Heavy snowfall gives way to the season for ultimate mountain sport, skiing, which begins in early November and lasts till June.

Solang Nallah in Manali is an ideal place for beginners and can start off on a 100 meter ski run. Travellers can also enjoy this outdoor activity at the Rohtang Pass as it is covered up in snow most of the year. Do not forget your ski boots and ski jackets as they are very essential for skiing.
