Dussehra, Sipi Fair, Doongri Festival are some of the festivals and events in Himachal Pradesh that are celebrated with much fervour across the state.
Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu Valley really knows how to celebrate Dussehra. It is an occasion commemorating the victory of Rama over Ravana according to the epic Ramayana, a victory symbolic of good vanquishing evil. The festivities start on the tenth day after the new moon in the month of September/October and carry on for the next seven days. What is different from the rest of the country is that the festivities do not end with the burning of the effigy of Ravana.
Other festivals in Himachal Pradesh include the Sipi Fair that is held at Shimla in the month of May. The Doongri Festival held in the same month at Manali is dedicated to Goddess Hadimba. One of the most interesting festivals in the state is the Shivratri Festival held at Mandi, when the deities from all temples in the district are brought over to the Bhutnath Temple.
Chamba celebrates two festivals - the Minjar Festival in late July / early August and the Sui Festival in March/April.
