Eating Out in Manali

Eating out in Manali is sampling a mixture of the standard north Indian fare, south Indian dosas, Chinese and Tibetan dishes along with the odd Italian pizzeria and German pastry shops.

Most of the restaurants in Manali usually serve a combination of Indian, Chinese and western dishes, while the relatively inexpensive dhabas near the bus stand are best for plain and simple, no frills hot meals. Old Manali is where you should head to if you are looking for fine dining options, best cafes and bars. Most of the restaurants here are frequented by expats and retired or semi-retired actors.

‘The Zing Zing Bar & Restaurant’ is one of the best places with a well-stocked bar and serves Indian and Chinese cuisine. It is located in the main market of the Model Town.

‘Chopsticks’ is famous for its Inter- continental and Chinese Delicacies and is located in the Manali mall. Do try the Trout fish- its the speciality of this restaurant.

Mount View Restaurant in the Manali Mall offers Japanese, Chinese and Tibetan specialties along with beverages and snacks. The ambience of the restaurant is quite chilled out with friendly staff around.

Raj Rasoi Restaurant is well known for its mouth-watering cuisines- Gujarati, South Indian, Punjabi, Jain, and Chinese.

Satyam Restaurant in the Manali Mall is a pretty decent place for one time reasonable breakfast or lunch. Feel at ease at the ‘Cosy Restaurant’. Located in the Mall, the restaurant offers amazing North Indian and South Indian cuisine.

Lazy Dog has an amazing ambience with a fireplace inside the restaurant. The multi- cuisine restaurant has a nice setting with outdoor seating arrangements. Music, fresh salads, cocktails, and mocktails- everything is right here in Lazy Dog. Usually tipping is not mandatory but if you wish just tip 10 % of your bill. Do remember that credit cards are not accepted in Manali. All restaurants are open from 9 am to 11 pm.

Several cafes around the Mall also serve early-morning breakfast of hot porridge, pancakes and toast with jam.

Bob Dylan’s Café, also known as ‘Roasted and Toasted,’ is one such place that serves most delicious cookies and sandwiches.

Shiva café happens to be a little expensive but you can have a decent meal in here- Tibetan soups, dumplings with sandwiches and snacks are the best on the menu.

Moon dance is located right opposite to Bob Dylan’s Café and serves with multi- cuisine dishes on its menu.

A riverside café, known as the Green Forest Café is located just across the bridge in Old Manali and offers a fine meal at a reasonable price- Olive Pizza, Apple Wine, Vegetarian Sizzler and Cheese Cake top the cafes menu.

Johnson’s Bar and Cafe is 5 minutes away from the Mall Road and serves pasta and salads, it makes a great place to chill out during the evening time. Cafes are generally expensive in Manali. However, roadside stalls/ Tibetan local eateries selling tea and omelettes are popular with tourists preparing for long onward journeys but if you have a sensitive stomach then avoid eating from small local stalls and dhabas.

The German Bakery, just opposite the Nehru Park is a great place for shakes, pastries, cookies and cakes!
