Check out the impressive colonial building of the Himachal State Museum in Shimla. Located at a hilltop in a house called ‘Inverarm,’ this museum is built in the spacious lawns. The impressive architecture of this museum is bound to grab everybody’s attention. The museum houses a good collection of Kangra and Mughal miniatures, Chamba embroidery, photographs, local handicrafts, coins, jewellery, temple carvings, paintings of Shimla and weapons - including some massive blunderbusses.

The building also features a doll gallery that showcases a collection of Himachali bride and tribal dolls while the collection which is worth a look. You will also be able to see a vast collection of damaged sculptures from all over the state including the 8th century stone images from Masrur and Bajaura. The museum houses a remarkable selection of Himachal's rich heritage. So if you are a history buff, an art lover or an architectural enthusiast take out an hour while visiting Shimla and enjoy exploring this remarkable landmark.

Best time to visit

Summer season is considered to be the best time to visit Shimla but the Museum can be visited throughout the year.


Himachal State Museum was opened on January 26, 1974 with the purpose of collecting and protecting the scattered cultural heritage of Himachal Pradesh.


The Himachal State Museum is open from 10:00 am till 1:30 pm and from 2:00 pm till 5:00 pm on all days of the week except Mondays. The museum also remains closed on the gazetted holidays.
