History

The Shimla Summer Hill is an extremely beautiful tourist spot situated at an altitude of 1283 meters. It is located on the way of Shimla to Kalka and is only 5km from the Ridge Road of Shimla. The place is surrounded by serene beauty of quiet hills, which give it a breathtaking aura.

The hill has been associated with Mahatma Gandhi, since his visit to Shimla. Once, Mahatma Gandhi during his visit to Himachal Pradesh University stayed at the age old Georgian House of Raj Kumari Amrit Kaur, which stands adorned with its remarkable architecture.

The Summer Hill is a perfect place for taking a leisurely walk amidst the tranquillity of Mother Nature. Owing to its location between canopy of hilly trees like the pine and deodar, the lush green scenery of the Summer Hill adds to the beauty of the place. The impressive view of the snow clad mountain terrains is purely mesmerising and unforgettable. Also, the hill majorly supplies the clay which is used for making earthen pots by potters.

Summer Hill is now a major tourist destination and is visited by thousands of tourists every year. Apart from taking strolls along the path and getting photographs clicked at this exotic backdrop, people can also have a joyful ride on the horses' back through the dense forest region of Cedar and Oak. The Summer Hill of Shimla is visited by tourists all the year round because of its extremely pleasant climate. Ideally, the best time to visit the place is during summers, when the weather is cool and relative humidity is quite less. On the contrary, the winters are extremely cold and freezing, leaving the streets unattended by people.

Summer Hill is also known as the Potter’s Hill since many potters used to visit the place to gather clay for making pots.
