Economy of Jammu & Kashmir

Jammu & Kashmir has a largely agrarian economy, with 49% of its total workforce employed in agro-pastoral activities. The economy was also dependent on tourism, which has suffered severely in the past decade. The state has export earnings from sale of handicraft items and food products. Amongst the major exports, textiles go to Germany, Saudi Arabia, Nepal, Belgium, Italy, Sri Lanka, Switzerland and Turkey. Knitwear is exported to USA, Canada, Japan, the Middle East, Bangladesh and Malaysia. The UK, Taiwan and Israel buy chemicals, while several European countries import dry fruits like walnuts, almonds and apricots. Certain agro and manufacturing industries have been set up in the state for the production of plastics, textiles, cricket bats, walnut and kernels, apricot nuts and chemicals. Kashmir is one of the few regions of the world that grows and exports the expensive spice, saffron.
