This apart there are two major festivals in BR Hills that are celebrated by the aboriginal Soliga Tribe with great reverence. The tribal worship one of the oldest trees Dodda Sampige Mara as an incarnation of Lord Shiva on the eve of Mahashivratri in February. They offer milk, bel leaves, and flowers among other things and pray for the overall prosperity.
The Soliga Tribe holds Lord Ranganatha (or Biligiriranga in local parlance) with high reverence. During the Ranganatha Car festival held in April, the statues of the deities ‘Biligiri Ranganatha’ and his consort ‘Ranganayaki’ are taken out in a procession in a chariot or ‘Ratha’ down the BR Hills.
