History of Alappuzha

The district of Alappuzha has been over the centuries, dominated by both, local and colonial rulers and signs of its history lie scattered across the district, within easy reach of the city. In the 16th century Alappuzha was divided into two principalities, Moothedath and Iledath. Around the same time the Portuguese arrived in the area and set up shop. By the 17th century the Portuguese had been sent packing by the Dutch, who signed a number of treaties with local rulers, allowing the colonial power to set up factories and warehouses for the storage of spices in the area. Since the rule of Maharaja Marthandavarma, Alappuzha became an important trading hub.
