Sightseeing in Alappuzha

Among the sightseeing places here, the Alappuzha beach is very popular with tourists. This beautiful white sand beach caressed by the deep blue Arabian Sea is the perfect place to relax, sunbathe and rejuvinate. The pier here is said to be over a 100 years old.

The Mullackal Rajarajeshwari temple is a must visit especially during the festive season. Located in the heart of the city, Goddess Rajarajeshwari is the presiding deity at this temple. Two festivals are celebrated here. The 'Navaratri' festival is celebrated for nine days with great gusto. A splendid procession of elephants is held in addition to a variety of cultural programmes during the festival. The last two days of the festival (Mahanavami and Vijayadasami) are considered the most auspicious days by the people of Alappuzha. The other really popular festival celebrated here is Thaipooyakavadi.

The Mahavishnu temple and the Devi temple are considered the oldest temples in the Alappuzha district. The Mahavishnu temple was originally built in the middle of a pond which has now dried up and is completely covered with sand. The two temples are in the same complex. THe Mahavishnu temple has a huge festival in January that draws plenty of pilgrims, as does the festival at the Devi temple in March.
