Vembanad Lake


Considered as the biggest brackish lagoon in Kerala, Vembanad Lake is an enthralling picnic spot and one of the interesting backwater tourist destinations. Covering an area of 80 kilometres, the banks of Vembanad Lake are surrounded with evergreen forests, coconut trees plantation and these wooded banks invite a huge number of nesting water-birds to the lake.

Situated at a distance of 16 kilometres from Kottayam town, the Vembanad Lake is renowned for its lush green environs, exciting boat cruises, fishing, and sightseeing tours and comes alive during Onam with spectacular snake boat races. The view is really spell binding for a visitor as more than hundred oarsmen in one boat, cut their way through the calm waters to the fast rhythm of their full throated singing.

This apart, the popular Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary on the eastern banks of the Vembanad Lake is a bird watchers’ delight as it a favourite spot for migratory birds and you can spot some really exotic species of migratory birds at the lake. Best time to visit

The best time to visit the Vembanad Lake in Kumarakom is between November and March when the weather is pleasant enough to explore the outdoors.This is also the time to see a number of migratory birds.


The Vembanad Lake an ecologically important wetland and on the international wetland list for conservation and sustainablity.


There are no particular timings to visit this beautiful lake at Kumarakom in Kerala.
