Languages of Kerala

People speak different languages in Kerala. The state with highest literacy level puts a lot of emphasis on education. Malayalam is the official and local language of the state. It is a Dravidian Language. There are variations in the language as per the location and the community.

The language spoken by Syriac Christians is influenced by English, Latin, Portuguese and Syriac; whereas, the Muslim population speaks Malayali that has Urdu and Arabic influence.

Apart from Malayalam, people speak English, Tamil, Marathi and Konkani. Most of the people of the state speak fluent English. So, conversing with the local people of Kerala is not a tedious task for a visitor.
