Thiruvananthapuram Travel Guide

Travel to Thiruvananthapuram before a city you might fall in love with disappears. The ‘city of the sacred serpent’, with its winding cobbled lanes, traditional red tiled wooden houses with pagoda tops and languid pace is unfortunately not much of a tourist hot spot.

Still somewhat simple and lovely, Thiruvananthapuram (earlier Trivandrum) is bound to sooner rather than later succumb to the disaster that passes for urban development. A pleasant city in one the most beautiful states in India, Thiruvananthapuram merits more than just a transit stop on the way to Kovalam Beach.

If you're visiting any temples there will be a strict dress code you'll be expected to adhere to. Men and boys must go bare chested, and boys in addition have to wear the traditional Keralan mundu-the long white skirt like garment, worn around the loins and falling to the ankles. Women may wear sarees but salwar kurtas and western wear is taboo and must be covered up with the long mundu like garment as well. Both items of clothing for men as well as women are available for hire at the temple.

India’s first IT park, Techno-Park, established in 1995 is situated in Thiruvananthapuram.
