Sightseeing in Varkala

On your sightseeing tour, these are some of the attractions you should not miss. The Janadharna Swamy Temple is a famous temple in the region. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, it is said to be over 2000 years old. It is believed that the original temple was destroyed by tidal waves. According to legend, years later when a Pandayan king came to the area to do penance for a sin he had committed Lord Brahma pardoned the king in turn of the promise that he would rebuild the temple on the same site. That's how the existing temple came to be. Non- Hindus are not allowed in the inner sanctum of the temple but can walk around it. The festivals here are celebrated with great gusto and lots of colour.

The Sivagiri Mutt is 2.5 kms from the town of Varkala on the banks of the Thiruvanthapuram-Shornin Canal. This ashram is devoted to Sree Narayana Guru, who preached against discrimination and in favour of the idea of 'one caste, one religion, one god for humanity'. He had a huge following amongst people of lower castes and even now his shrine attracts thousands of pilgrims each year.

The Anjengo Fort was a strategic garrison built by the Dutch East India Company near Varkala. In the 17th and 18th century it played an important role in their military strategy and protected their powerful position in the state.

With its white sand beach, golden sunset, gentle waters and towering cliffs this breathtaking beach is a popular haunt with tourist. 3 km from this beach are mineral fresh water springs. Even before Papanasam beach became popular with tourists this auspicious site was very popular with pilgrims in and around Kerala.
