History of Pachmarhi

The year that Rani of Jhansi and her soldiers declared Mutiny, an English officer was sent to the Satpura jungles to quell the rebellion. Captain Forsyth of the Bengal Lancers, followed a route that took him to a saucer shaped plateau at 2000 feet above sea level, The vegetation was green and dense, there were clear gushing streams and crystal clear water.

In his journal Captain Forsyth mentions the population of tigers, leopards, bear and other carnivores was fairly significant in the dense jungles of Satpura. Amid the dense jungles was an abundance of mango and jamun trees.

He was so impressed by the beauty and abundance of this plateau, that when he became Deputy Commissioner he decided to make Pachmarhi a sanatorium – and so the colonial city came into existence. The Brit exodus began, a cantonment was established and with that the British influence in architecture, sports – polo, golf and billiards. Thanks to Captain Forsyth, the city of Pachmarhi evolved.
