History of Mahabaleshwar

Mahabaleshwar means ‘God of Great Power’ in Sanskrit. In 1215 King Singhan of Deogori first visited Mahabaleshwar. A Brahmin dynasty is said to have taken over around 1350, and they made the area prosperous. In the 16th century the Maratha family of Chandarao More annexed Mahabaleshwar and built the famous Mahabaleshwar temple. Shivaji during his rule built the famous Pratapgad Fort in 1656. From 1828 Mahabaleshwar was visited by Sir John Malcolm, Arthur, Carnac, Frere after whom the famous points in Mahabaleshwar are named.
