Sitabuldi Fort

Considered to be one of the jewels of Nagpur, the Sitabuldi Fort is one of the well-known attractions in Nagpur. Situated in the heart of the city, the Sitabuldi Fort lies between the twin hills of Sitabuldi and in fact got its name from these hills.

The fort, which now houses the office of Indian Territorial Army, invites thousands of tourists both locals and foreigners owing to its impressive history. According to the history it is believed that the fort was built in 1857 by a British officer and was a silent observer of the popular third Anglo-Maratha war, wherein Marathas were brutally defeated. After the Battle of Sitabuldi, the Britishers constructed barracks and a trough around the fort to make it stronger and less vulnerable to the enemies.

Popular for its magnificent edifice, the Sitabuldi Fort, today, houses a war memorial, which has been built to commemorate the dedication of the soldiers who lost their lives during the popular Anglo-Maratha war. The Indian Army maintains the memorial as well as the graves of all the soldiers as a mark of remembrance and respect for their gallantry.

The Sitabuldi Fort also houses a cell where Mahatma Gandhi was imprisoned and which today is one of the major attractions in the fort. The fort is also popular for the picturesque views of the scenic Sitabuldi hills that it offers to the visitors.
