Activities in Nagaland

Outdoor activities abound in the beautiful state of Nagaland. Take your pick from angling in the gushing river that flows through, to trekking and camping in the green forests and hills that make up this lovely state.

Angling: The main rivers that flow through Nagaland are Dhansiri, Doyang, Dikhu and Jhanji. Milak River and Tula River flowing in Mokokchung district of Nagaland serve as exciting angling spots for keen anglers. You can find a variety of fish species like the famous Indian Mahseer, local trout, salmon etc. You can hire the fishing equipments like fishing rods and nets, hooks, bait etc from the shops near the rivers and lakes or even arrange them from your tour operator at very reasonable charges. One should avoid fishing alone especially during the night time as it is not advised to go without a local guide and a guide map of that particular area.

Camping: Outdoor enthusiasts looking for adventure activity can go camping in the virgin forests of Satoi Range. Dzukou Valley also is an ideal camping site where travellers can take pleasure of the serene environment. Governor's Camp, in the foothills by the Doyang River, is also a lovely spot for camping.

Trekking: Adventure buffs can go trekking in the hills and terrains of Nagaland. Dzukou Valley is well known for trekking. The valley is perched at an altitude of 2438m above the sea level. The valley is full of lilies and rhododendrons and is surrounded by hills, natural caves, rocks and therefore is the most satisfying treks in this part. Saramati Peak in Twensang District, the largest mountain range in Nagaland, is covered with snow during winters and is a challenging route for trekkers. Japfu Peak in Kohima is another famous spot for trekkers. Other trekking trails for complete nature lovers include- Mount Tiyi, Patkai Hills, Mokokchung and Satoi Range. The best time to go trekking is in the months between June and September. Carry comfortable walking shoes, sun tan lotion and packaged drinking water.
