Church Of Our Lady Of Immaculate Conception

History

The Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception of Pondicherry, completed in 1791, is a robin’s-egg-blue-and-cloud-white typically Jesuit edifice which gives us a glimpse of the old day India. This church situated on the Cathedral Street was the only old building that survived the British attack. The church is dedicated to St. Peters and is the mother church for the Roman Catholic. The church is also known as Samba Kovil by the local people.

It has a bell tower and a choir loft which was added much later after the construction of the church. There is a walkway in front of the Cathedral which hosts liturgical ceremonies and special functions. The legend says that the Church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception was built after razing the Hindu temple of Lord Shiva.
