Sawai Madhopur and Tonk are the places near Ranthambore that are worth visiting.
Located 20 kms away from Ranthambore is the small city of Sawai Madhopur. The history of the place dates back to the 18th century, when King Sawai Madho Singh I was the ruler of Jaipur region. There are many historical and archaeological sites, religious places in and around the city, including the Handar Fort, Sawai Man Singh Sanctuary, Rameshwaram Ghat and Sameton ki Haveli that can be visited. The religious minded can visit some of the temples in Sawai Madhopur; the significant ones being Shri Mahaveerji Temple, Amareshwar Mahadeo Temple, Kaila Devi Temple and the Chauth Mata Temple.
Tonk, located on the banks of the River Banas is at a distance of 96 kms from Ranthambore. The historical monuments in the town present the bygone era, when this place was ruled by various dynasties. Sunehri Kothi or the ‘Mansion of Gold’ is the key attraction of the place. Located on Najar Bagh Road, this place is also called the Sheesh Mahal because it showcases some fantastic glass paintings. Sunehri Kothi, as the name suggests, has walls polished in gold. Rasiya Ke Tekri, Ghanta Ghar, the Jama Masjid, Shivaji Garden are the other places to visit. Do visit the Hathi Bhata, where a single stone has been carved into an elephant.
