Saheliyon Ki Bari

History

Saheliyon Ki Bari is one of the most beautiful and popular destination in Udaipur. The garden lies in the northern part of the city, on the banks of Fateh Sagar Lake in the Indian state of Rajasthan. Saheliyon Ki Bari is famous for its lush green lawns, fountains and kiosks, a delightful lotus pool and marble elephants. There is also a small museum here; of which the main attraction are some stuffed cobras.

This renowned garden was designed by Maharana Sangram Singh as a present to his queen in the 18th century. The queen with her 48 maids, who were presented to the king as a part of the dowry on their marriage, came here for some leisure time. The queen with her maids spent some pleasurable moments away from the political intrigues of the court. This patterned garden used to be the popular relaxing spot of the royal ladies. The garden is also known as the ‘Garden of the Maids of Honour’ for the same reason.

Saheliyon Ki Bari is an alluring garden dotted with ornamental pools, lotus blossoms, bougainvillea creepers, marble pavilions, and flowerbeds, carved marble elephants, bird fountains and kiosks surmounted by a dome in the centre of the pool. A rose garden with over 100 varieties greets the visitors. The museum within the garden premises exhibits a huge collection of royal households. It has an interesting collection of old pictures besides some oddball exhibits such as stuffed cobras and other animals.

A few years later, Maharana Bhopal Singh built a pavilion of rain fountains. The notion was to form an illusion of rain dancing to the rhythm of the dancing maids. These fountains are believed to be imported from England in 1889. These fountains can be traced along a reservoir in the garden surrounded by four marbled cenotaphs in its four corners and one white marbled one in the centre. The terraces of these cenotaphs have water fountains shaped like birds from whose beaks water gushes out in thin sprays like the singing rain – producing a wonderful sight.

The gardens had been damaged once when the water of the lake flooded them but Maharana Fateh Singh reconstructed in the late nineteenth centuries to lend them their present forms.

Saheliyon ki Bari is a pleasant green retreat in Udaipur, and can be visited for its ambience and garden landscaping.
