The Thirumalai Nayak Palace in Madurai was constructed in 1636 by King Thirumalai Nayak with the assistance of an Italian Architect. The Palace Complex consisted of main two parts, namely Swargavilasa and Rangavilasa. The two sections of the palace housed the royal abodes, a temple, a theatre, apartments, palanquin place, armoury, regal bandstand, quarters, a pond and a garden.

Towards its west is the Throne Chamber of the palace, which has a vast room with an elevated, octagonal dome. Apart from being a seat of entertainment, the palace also served as a location for discussing matters pertaining to the administration of the regime. Post India’s independence, the palace was confirmed as a national monument and was put under the responsibility of Tamil Nadu Archaeological Department.
