Chaukandi Stupa

History

Chaukandi Stupa is an important Buddhist stupa in Sarnath. It was thought to be built originally as a terraced temple during the Gupta period between the 4th to 6th centuries. The stupa was raised to mark the site of where Lord Buddha and his disciples met while traveling from Bodhgaya to Sarnath. This stupa was later modified by the Govardhan, son of the king to what it is these days. He built an octagonal tower to commemorate the visit of Humayun. Apart from this, standing nearby Chaukhandi stupa one can find ruins of monasteries, courtyards and verandas. The structure is predominantly made out of bricks and thus, is fragile.
