Festivals and Events in Almora

There are innumerable festivals and events in Almora all centered around deities and the harvest. The terrain of the region makes these events even more significant, giving people living in remote areas a chance to socialize and rekindle community spirit.

The best known fair of Almora, is the Nanda Devi festival organized since the Chand kings ruled this place. It is believed that 'Nanda' meaning prosperity was the family Goddess of the Chanda dynasty. The temple of 'Nanda' in Almora was built in the seventeenth century. The duration of the festival is five days; approximately twenty five thousand people attend and it is all around the temple area.

The Uttraini festival of Bageshwer, is organized in the month of January for a period of one week and is attended mainly by traders. The merchandise traded at this time is anything from horses to shoes and fruit.

The Jageshwer Monsoon Festival is organized from 15 July to 15 August. The religious festival is centered round the temple of Lord Jagnath, built somewhere in 8th - 9th century.

The famous festival of Hindus, Dussehra, in October, commemorates the victory of good over evil. Dussehra is celebrated in most parts of India, but it has uniqueness in the way it is celebrated here and attracts thousands of tourists.
