History of Ramgarh

This hill resort once served as a British army cantonment. The colonial architecture can be seen in the Ramgarh bungalows. These bungalows, now heritage properties comprise of the famous Old Bungalow of the 1830’s, Vista Villa and The Writers’ Bungalow (1860). The interiors of these bungalows still retain the old world charm.

The house of one of the luminaries of Hindi literature, Mahadevi Varma, in Ramgarh village in Nainital district has been transformed into a national museum by the Government of Uttaranchal. This initiative has been taken to treasure the memory of the great writer and freedom fighter.
