Languages of West Bengal

Bengali is the mother-tongue of most of the native people and is the one of the widely spoken languages in West Bengal.

Other languages from the neighbouring states and countries are spoken here; for example, Oriya in the southern and coastal regions, Nepali in the northern districts of Darjeeling. Hindi is spoken by the North Indians living in the state; whereas, Urdu is spoken by the Muslim population. Santhali and other Bengali dialects are spoken in the rural areas by tribal people.

You may find some people speaking in Chinese and Burmese in small pockets of the capital city as well as in the Northern districts of West Bengal.
