Tagore's Ashram


The Santiniketan Ashram, also known as Tagore’s Ashram is located in Shantiniketan, West Bengal. Its foundation was laid by Maharishi Debendra Tagore, father of Rabindranath Tagore, in the year 1863. In 1901, with the efforts of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, the ashram was converted into an open air school that was eventually recognised as the Visva Bharti University in 1921. It is a tourist attraction where thousands of visitors each year come to witness the university – an envisioned and accomplished idea of Rabindranath Tagore.

Tagore’s Ashram, the abode of Rabindranath Tagore is recognised as a place of historical significance since he wrote many of his literary works here. The main objective of the ashram was to spread the concept of ‘Brahmo Dharma’. The ashram is currently involved in the upliftment of the under-privileged section of the society. Tagore’s Ashram is a house of distinctive and resplendent natural beauty which is worth watching.

Basanta Utsav, Barsha Mangal, Sharodutsav, Nandan Mela, Poush Mela, Magh Mela, Rabindra Jayanti are some of the notable and prominent events celebrated each year at Shantiniketan. Amongst these, Poush Mela which opens on the seventh day of the Poush month is one such 3 day grand affair attracting thousands of visitors from all over.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Tagore’s Ashram is from October to March. Shantiniketan enjoys a pleasant weather all through the year with slight changes during summer, winter and monsoon. However, spring mesmerises with its charm with natural beauty at its full bloom welcoming the Vasant Utsav and, thus, making March the most favourable time to visit the place.


Rabindranath Tagore converted the ashram into an open air school which was eventually recognized as the Visva Bharti University in 1921. He gave all his money from Nobel Prize and royalty money from his books to this University.


The visiting hours during winters are from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm; during summers are from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm; and during vacations (May - June and September - October on account of Durga Puja) are from 7:30 am to 11:00 am.

Tagore’s Ashram remains closed on Wednesdays.
