Currency of Israel

The currency is the new Israeli shekel (NIS) that is divided into 100 agorot. There are coins of 10 and 50 agorot, one and five NIS, and notes of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 NIS.

It is worthwhile to use US dollars in Israel, as most Israelis are familiar with US dollars. Most upmarket hotels, HI hostels and car companies accept payment in US dollars. You save the 17% Value Added Tax (VAT) also.

Major International Credit cards are accepted almost everywhere and bank foyers often have cash dispensing ATMs. As commission charges are very high at places look around for a good deal at no-commission currency exchange bureaus.
