What to Pack
Pack your walking shoes and preferably they should be ones that are well worn or at least ones that you’ve broken into. Countless travellers have to deal with the woes of shoe bite and don’t underestimate how big that can be.
Pack your clothes according to the season and purpose of your visit. Business travellers should pack formal clothing. Carry a light jacket even if you’re visiting in the summer. The Alpine regions are fairly cool even in the summer.
And of course, don’t forget the camera. Italy is one big photo-op, and every single moment has a potential photograph in it!

Travel Documents
A valid visa and passport are essential travel documents. While British, Irish and EU citizens need only a passport (and are allowed to stay as long as they please), citizens of the US, New Zealand, Australia, Canada and South Africa need a visa only if they are planning to stay longer than 3 months. If your stay is longer than 3 months you should apply for a residence permit or a permesso di soggiorno. All other nationals require obtaining a schengen visa to enter Italy.
You need not go through customs if you arrive from a EU country. There are no restrictions on import and export of currency.
