Siena Travel Guide

‘Inside this northern summer’s fold, the fields are full of naked gold…o gracious city well beloved…Siena my feet are no more moved.’ So goes the famous poem “Siena” by Algernon Charles Swinburne.

The historic and lively town of Siena is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Siena is a picturesque Tuscan town in Italy that retains its medieval flavour with beautiful churches, museums, squares and monuments.

A visit to Siena has to be for three good reasons- Art and architecture of the quaint town, stunning medieval monuments and buildings and its annual Palio horse racing event at the lively central square of Piazza del Campo. Thanks largely to its conquest by Florence half a millennium ago, the Renaissance that invaded Florence just passed Siena by.

Though Siena is not flooded with Renaissance treasures like arch rival Florence is, the town has remarkably well preserved Gothic and Medieval architecture. Come and escape into Siena’s rich past, interact with the warm and hospitable Sienes, refresh yourself with long and leisure walks and admire the stunning environs, surely you’ll come back craving for more!

Are you aware of the fact that underneath the streets of Siena is a 25 kilometer system of tunnels (known as Bottini) which has been a source of water in the houses since the 12th century? Take a guided tour to the Bottini (only in spring and autumn) and get to know more about the mysterious underground waterways of Siena.

Siena is known to be the capital of the most famous Tuscan Wine regions- Montalcino, Montepulciano, San Gimignano and Chianti Classico. In fact, Siena’s Enoteca italiana, which is located inside the medieval building Fortezza Medicea, is a place where you can taste excellent rare wines and also admire the huge collection of precious labels, kept for exhibition for decades.

Siena has also become known as a jazz center, as it holds a variety of concerts between the end of July and the first week in August and which feature a host of famous names. In addition, Siena has become renowned for the study of jazz theory that takes place here.
