Getting around in Maldives

By Air

None of the islands are so big that getting around could be a problem. From Male there are several options for getting to your resort. The national airline flies to 4 major islands and the views are pretty much breathtaking.

There are air taxis run by Maldivian Air Taxi and the Trans Maldivian Airways. No distance is more than 45 minutes from any place.

To go to uninhabited islands you will have to pay an Inter Atoll Travel Permit which has to be issued from the Ministry of Atolls. But if your tours are organised by hotels then a permit is not required.

By Water

Boats are equivalent of cars but are usually for locals. For tourists there are planes and private yachts. Taxi boats take the tourists from one island to the other. Local boats called ‘vedis’ and ‘dhonis’ also operate.
