Currency of Mexico

The basic unit of currency is the peso. Notes are in denominations of M$1,000, 500, 200, 100, 50 and 20. Coins are in denominations of M$100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1, and 50, 20, 10 and 5 centavos. Please note that the M$1,000 note is difficult to change and often not accepted and the M$100 and M$50 coins are rarely seen. Mexican Nuevo Pesos are actually demarcated with a $ sign, so to distinguish from the US Dollars (US$) that are also in use, especially in areas frequented by tourists, the symbols M$, N$ or NP are found.

Credit cards are commonly accepted in establishments, shops and business centers. Visa, Mastercard and American Express cards are preferred.

It’s a good idea to exchange a few dollars into pesos before arriving in the country or leaving the airport, so that you have pesos for your cab fare.
