How to Get to Marrakech

How to Get to Marrakech by Air

Marrakech Menara Airport is the airport of Marrakech. The airport is located 6 km south of the city. It serves direct and connecting flights to many European cities and some other destinations across the world.

From the airport one can hire a cab or take a bus to any parts of the city. You can hire petit taxis from outside the airport building to the city centre of Marrakech that is Djemaa el-Fna, or to your hotel. Petit taxis charge lesser than the grand taxis.

Marrakech Menara Airport Facilities

There are two terminals that serve the airport. Also there are help desks offering information round the clock. At both the terminals there are currency exchange offices and at the arrival area of terminal 2 ATMs are located.

For dining and drinks there are restaurants, snack bars and bars located at the airport building. If you wish to shop, the options at the airport are plenty. You can collect souvenirs from the several duty free shops, gift shops selling local craft items.

If you are looking for a stay in the airport vicinity, there is plethora of hotels and riads. Sofitel Marrakech, Riad Kniza, Ibis Moussafir Marrakech Palmeraie and Kenzi Semaris are some of the hotels and riads located within 10 minutes distance from the airport.

How to Get to Marrakech by Rail

There are regular trains from Rabat, Casablanca, Tangier, Fes and Meknes. The Marrakech Train Station popular among locals as the Gare de Marrakech is on Ave Hassan II, which is quite far from Djemaa el-Fna, the city center of Marrakech.

To reach your hotel or any other parts of the city you can take a bus or hire a taxi that are just outside the station.

Hotel La Renaissance, BAB Hotel, Sofitel Marrakech Palais Imperial, and Sofitel Marrakech Lounge and Spa are some of the hotels located within 500 meters range of the railway station.

How to Get to Marrakech by Bus

There are daily buses from Agadir, Casablanca, Fes and Quarzazate. One can also take grande taxis from these destinations to Marrakech. CTM, Pullman du sud and Supratours are some of the bus companies which offer regular and comfortable bus services.

The city is linked to Casablanca by the P7, Fes by the P24, Ouarzazate by the P31, Essaouira by the P10, and Agadir via the P10 then P40. Eurolines offers services to Marrakech from many European destinations. International buses provide services in the Guéliz CTM office on Boulevard Mohammed Zerktouni.

Supratours provides comfortable, air-conditioned express bus services from Essaouira, Agadir and Laayoune. Beware of the taxi touts who often gather near the bus station and provide you with wrong information.

Getting Around Marrakech

Driving within Marrakech is not recommended as almost everywhere there are traffic jams. For getting around in the city, you can use the services of the petit taxi or hop on to a bus. Taxi drivers will try to overcharge by not using the meter. Insist that it is used.

You can also ride in one of the shared taxis which are available on every nook and corner of the city. They operate on a wide variety of routes and are much quicker than the buses. Also they charge reasonable rates.

The car hiring companies which serves the city includes Budget 0524 431 180, Europcar 0524 431 228 and Hertz 0524 439 984. Although there are many smaller companies which offer car hiring facility at cheaper rates but their service is not up to the mark.

Alternatively, you can also opt to hire bicycles and scooters from Marrakech Motostel 0524 448 359. Before hiring check if they are in good condition. You must also keep in mind that a mountain bike may be needed to handle rugged unpaved roads.

For an experience of a different kind, take a ride on a buggy - horse drawn carriage. Just be sure to fix the price in advance or you may literally get taken for a ride!
