How to Get to Nigeria

How to get to Nigeria by Air

There are several carriers flying into Lagos international airport (Murtala Muhammad international airport). Recently, British Airways, which had been banned from landing in Lagos, has been allowed to do so, and Nigerian Airways flights also land at London Heathrow. There is a departure tax of US$35 for international destinations.

How to get to Nigeria by Road

Benin- there is an excellent road from Lagos to Cotonou in Benin. To hire a share-taxi to a destination in Benin (you can enter Benin either through Kamba or Gaya), go to the Ebutero motor park near the Udumata bus stop in Lagos.

Cameroon- the most popular road route between Nigeria and Cameroon is from Enugu or Calabar to Mamfe. You can also try the crossing in the far north of the country between Maiduguri and Maroua. There is a possibility of harassment by the Cameroon customs authorities on account of your possession of a camera. Niger-the most popular road route to Niger is from Kano to Zinder.

How to get to Nigeria by Sea

There are several ways of getting to Idenao in Nigeria from Oron, south of Calabar in Cameroon. These include speedboats and long wooden motorized boats that usually carry smuggled merchandise but would be willing to take you for a price. Of course, the possibility of your captain changing his landing plans to avoid customs officials in the second type of boat journey is all too real. The main problem, unfortunately, in any type of journey between Cameroon and Nigeria, is that Oron is fraught with conflict between Nigeria and Cameroon, and travellers can expect a hard time.
