Eating Out in Norway

Although Norway has lots of fancy restaurants that serve excellent local and international cuisine, in fact, Scandinavia’s only Michelin rated restaurant is in Oslo. Egon is among the favourite places that serve everything from teaks and fish to tacos and hamburgers. For more affordable yet filling food you’d do well to patronise smaller establishments, including the many cafés, sandwich bars and fast food joints in the country. Breakfast, even in cheap youth hostels, is a big spread where you can really fuel up for the day, and there are lots of options for the other meals. Among the cheaper alternatives are picnic food from large stores; cafeterias which do self-service lunches; and smørbrød, the ubiquitous Scandinavian open sandwich or koldtbord, a hot/cold buffet- the Norwegian equivalent of a smörgåsbord. For some traditional Norwegian food head to Engebret Café that has been in business for over 140 years and serves lip smacking food. Large cities generally have lots of hot dog stalls, pizzerias and fast food joints, but though they’re cheap, the quality of food may often be questionable.

Liquor is expensive in Norway, and except for beer, can be bought by the bottle only at state-controlled shops. Bars stay open till about 11 pm, and till even later in large cities, where they’re often the focus of the nightlife. Bagel & Juice is one of the best in the Bars & Lounges list.

Recreation, other than the bars, discotheques and nightclubs, covers everything from cinema and theatre to jazz. Large concerts- jazz, rock, folk and classical music- are held mainly in the summer months, and smaller shows keep happening throughout the year. In addition, there are a number of theatre ensembles, both professional and amateur, which hold shows, large and small, even in smaller towns and villages.

Live life to the fullest. Make a list of ‘ things to do before I die’ and tick ...
