History of Lisbon

Believed to have been founded by Phoenicians around the 6th century BC, the city was conquered and occupied by the Islamic Moors until 700 AD. In 1260 it became the capital of Portugal. With Portugal’s colonial expansion, it also became one of the most glorious and wealthy cities in the continent.

Lisbon has survived not only foreign occupation, but also earthquakes and tidal waves that destroyed much of the region in 1755. The neutral capital of a neutral nation during World War II, Lisbon became a haven for refugees and immigrants alike during the period.
