Oporto Travel Guide

Oporto - known also as Porto, or even just as `the Port’, is the city that has lent its name not just to the well-loved wine, port, but also to the country in which it lies, Portugal. Oporto is Portugal’s second largest city, a town by the river Duoro, and one of the most important industrial and commercial centres of the region. That, however, does not mean that Oporto is all smokestacks and ugly factories; much of the industry is devoted to the production of port wine, and Oporto, despite its reputation as an economic hub, has lots to interest tourists. The city’s centre, one of the best-preserved historic areas in Portugal, was designated a World Heritage site by the UNESCO in 1996, and all across the city are beautiful old churches and interesting museums.

Whether you spend your holiday doing the rounds of the churches, the museums and the port wine centres, or just stroll through the medieval streets of the city centre and relax with a glass of wine while listening to local fado music, you are be assured of a good time.
